Golden News from Stuart High School

We are pleased to inform you that our School has been awarded the Fairfax County Public Schools G.O.L.D.E.N Wellness Award (Giving Others Lifelong Desire for Exercise and Nutrition) for the 2012-2013 school year. The Golden Wellness Award is the highest award given by the Fairfax County Public School Wellness Task Force.

We appreciate all of the time and energy our staff (most notably Sharon Ponton) have put forth to promote student health and contribute to the reduction of childhood obesity. The collaboration with the wellness liaison, the physical education department, the school’s Food and Nutrition Services, and the community during the year demonstrates a combined effort that was evident in our self-assessment response.

Dance:               As reported from the Fairfax Times,

Fairfax students get rare opportunity to dance classics Working with legendary choreographer Paul Taylor ‘an incredible opportunity’

There are 32 students in Fairfax Academy’s dance courses. Stuart High School senior Elizabeth Burr, 18, is an understudy for one of the Taylor pieces.

“It was a great experience because he’s a famous choreographer that a lot of us had heard of before,” she said. “It’s not something we would normally get before college. ... In most of the studios I’ve been in, we’ve done a lot of contemporary but not a lot of modern. Modern is its own style that is more into the ground. Ballet is more upright.”

The cultural program that Mojib planned “gave him the opportunity to teach other students that race is not an obstacle to achieve our goals,” Spanish teacher Maria Neag wrote in her letter of support. Mojib plans to attend George Washington University’s Elliot School of International Affairs.
