Barbara Christine Sowers (Witzig), 68, an information technology specialist with the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve for 20 years, died April 23, 2015, at her home in Annandale, Va. The cause was cancer. Mrs. Witzig was born Barbara Sowers at Fort Clayton in what then was the Panama Canal Zone, where her father was an Army chaplain. She lived in Northern Virginia since 1955. She retired from the Federal Reserve about 10 years ago, then went into business for herself as chief executive of Instructional Consulting Services, an organization offering educational support services. Her bachelors degree in political science was from the George Washington University, and her masters in human performance was from Marymount University in Arlington, VA. She shared her home with two Siamese cats, whom she adopted and adored. She said she could only have two cats at one time, otherwise, there were not enough laps to go around. She was thrilled to meet a red tailed hawk at the University of Tennessee School of Veterinary Science (where she established an endowed professorship); see wild sheep in Colorado or seals in San Francisco Bay; watch camels in Egypt; pet a cheetah in South Africa; and fascinated by herds of elephant in Zimbabwe. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Eric Witzig (Class of 1964), and her sister, Dr. Karen M. Sowers (Class of 1968), the Dean of the School of Social Work at UT Knoxville.
