Obituary

Dr. Karen Beattie (school psychologist, age 55) passed away on the 29th of July 2012 at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Virginia, after an 8 year battle with cancer.

Karen started her career as a special education teacher in the Virginia state school system. However, after obtaining her doctorate, she ran a very successful psychology practice in Vienna, Virginia, where she was known for the depth and quality of her psychoeducational reports. She also taught for many years as an adjunct professor at George Mason University and interned for two years as a psychologist at Children's Hospital in Washington, DC.

Karen published academic papers and received many awards and distinctions, both when she was a student and when she was a teacher. She was a kind, loving, wonderful woman, who always understated her many achievements. She was loved by all who knew her, and she will be missed greatly by her friends and family.

Karen married Dr. Mark Beattie in 1997. She is survived by her husband, her two brothers, Dr. Michael Kiesel and Robert Kiesel, and her parents, Dr. Robert Kiesel and Rosemary Kiesel. She is also survived by eight nieces, Amanda, Natalie, Robin, Emily, Carmen, Clarissa, Katie and Laura.

A memorial mass is being held for Karen at Saint Mary of Sorrows Catholic Church in Fairfax, Virginia (5222 Sideburn Road Fairfax Va22032) at 1:00pm on Friday, 24th August, 2012.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Arc of Virginia (www.thearcofva.org) on Karen's behalf.

I have posted Karen's obituary.  She was probably the sweetest, kindest person I have ever known and such a great friend in high school.  I am fortunate to have been in touch with her during her last few years of life so knew of her battle with cancer.  She was courageous and always hopeful, and seemed to accept and trust God with her fate.  Karen made my high school days richer, she will always be remembered with fond memories.
