Virginia (Ginny) Sumner (Ax) - Class Of 1962

Virginia Sumner Ax  
Virginia (Ginny) passed away suddenly but peacefully with family present on April 29, 2021 at Fairfax Inova Hospital following a stroke. She was born October 26, 1943 in Washington, DC to Beverly and Richard Sumner. Growing up in the Sleepy Hollow area of Fairfax County, she graduated from JEB Stuart High School in 1962 and from Mary Washington University in 1967 with a BA degree. Ginny was a wife, mother, educator, and volunteer. She began her teaching career in New Hampshire in 1968 and returned to Fairfax County, Virginia after two years, continuing to teach elementary school children until retiring after 30 years in 1998. She enjoyed following many of her students' careers well into their adulthood. Upon retirement, first in Burke and then moving to the Clifton, VA area, Ginny enjoyed travel, reading, decorating, photography, cooking, and volunteering. For more than 15 years she volunteered at the polls during elections. In Clifton she joined the Clifton Community Woman's Club and was active in their many charitable and social activities, such as being a docent for the annual Clifton Homes Tour. Ginny was also active in the Balmoral Homeowner's Association, serving on the Communications Committee for many years, being the unofficial photographer for activities, and participating in a variety of community events. She was an avid Words with Friends player, playing with people from around the world.Survivors include her husband of 37 years, George Robert Ax, Sr., her daughter, Allison K. Wood, her brother, Richard John Sumner, Jr. of Williamsburg, two stepsons, George R. Ax, Jr. (Cathleen) and David T. Ax (Susan) of Arlington, and five step-grandchildren. Celebration of life and burial plans are pending.
