Casey died on October 25, 1975, of cancer, half a year after he graduated. JEB Stuart High School honored him for awhile with a "Casey Bray Memorial Award" for the best student-athlete in a given school year. I can find no information on the internet about that award -- how sad that someone we respected and honored when we were young, for his wonderful spirit and compassion, even in the face of his own pain, can be forgotten in a matter of one generation.
I was not one of Casey's best friends through High School, but I will never forget him. He always had a smile on his face (even a bit of a mischeivous type), a kind word to say, or a great story to tell. Never put himself above his peers even though he excelled at every sport offered in school. I will never forget his uncompromised spirit, attitude of pure confidence, air of greatness, great sense of humor, and underlying selflessness.
I'm all for restoring his award if it has been lost. He deserves no less!
