ANNOUNCEMENTS

LETTER FROM THE PTA PRESIDENT

As a Stuart parent, neighborhood resident, and current Parent, Teacher, Student Association (PTSA) President, I’d like to offer a few thoughts regarding the school’s name change. As I’m sure you have, I have experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly of this process over the last couple of years.

Now that Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has made their decisions, we have an opportunity to shift our energy toward building on the good. It is time for the whole community to move forward in a way that supports our school, our dedicated administration and teachers, and especially our students.

If you supported the name change in principle, please find a way to help support it in practice. Consider contributing to the funding if this is appropriate for your family (go to FCPS’s site at https://www.fcps.edu/justice to make a tax deductible donation).

There are also non-financial ways of helping our different booster and other organizations through the transition; I encourage you to reach out to your favorite booster, club or other organization to find out what they need. We likely will know more when Superintendent Lockard publishes his implementation plan on December 14.

To everyone, including those who may be unhappy about the change: All of the ways that the school has always needed our support still exist. Music teachers and boosters are planning spring trips and purchasing uniforms as they always have. Sports equipment wears out and needs to be replaced whether it is for J.E.B. Stuart High School or Justice High School. These are just a few of the extracurricular activities that are important to our children’s education and fulfillment.

With parent/community donations and volunteer time, the PTSA thanks the staff who work tirelessly for our students; we host a safe, fun all-night party for our new graduates in the spring; we award teacher grants and student scholarships; and more. We count on you now, as we always have, to help the PTSA be successful in accomplishing its mission: to contribute to and enhance the academic and overall educational experience and success of all Stuart students.

If you have supported the school’s teams, groups and initiatives in the past, please remember that the current and future students are just as deserving of that support as previous ones were.

Change is hard. A lot of the time, most of us don’t feel heard by people “on the other side.” I promise that regardless of what position you hold, I have heard you, and I respect your right to that position. Let’s all recognize now that there is no longer an “other side.” We all need to be on the same side – the side of our students and their school.

Jodi Callahan

President, J.E.B. Stuart HS 2017-18 PTSA
