ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome home to our friend, Tom Shadyac! Tom grew up in Falls Church where he attended St. Anthony’s and JEB Stuart HS, and then off to Charlottesville for UVA. From college he went West where he became a wildly successful Hollywood director. Some of his films include Ace Ventura, Liar Liar, Patch Adams, Nutty Professor, Bruce Almighty, Dragonfly, and many others. Several years ago, Shadyac turned to charity work. He gave away much of his wealth and lives with the mantra of mirroring nature in only taking what one needs in this world. His father (a friend of Danny Thomas’) worked in fundraising for St. Jude’s hospital in Memphis, as his brother, Rick Shadyac now does (CEO of ALSAC). Tom founded Memphis Rox several years ago to inspire the youths of Memphis to become positive, contributing members of their community and society. I hope you can attend this event - I guarantee it will be hilarious, inspirational, and fun! For tickets or more info, go to https://web.charityengine.net/ROXCC. Hey Alum - just wanted to let you know about the Justice/Stuart Educational Foundation - this year a record $275K was awarded to our graduates.  I know some of us wished the fund was around when we were in school.

Many of our classmates help this fund by donating.  If you haven't yet - please go to https://www.jhsscholars.org/

              J.E.B. Stuart Combined Class Reunion

Dear Alum,                                                                                           August 14, 2023

This will be our 6th Combined Class Reunion for the classes of 1961 thru 1965. This year by popular demand we will be extending the Reunion to include the classes of 1966 thru 1976. The first sixteen graduating classes of JEB Stuart all joined together to celebrate a memorable event in our Golden Years. After all we are the ones who started it all and we have a lot to be proud of, so let’s celebrate together while we can. Now, here is what we have planned for the weekend, which will be a Real Extravaganza that will be remembered for a long time.

Friday, the 20th of October we will start the weekend off at 7pm with a social in the Hilton Cardinal Lounge, which offers a cool and relaxed ambience evening. This has been a fun and popular event for everybody to gather together and catch up on everything in a lively conversation and renew friendships.

Saturday, the 21st of October there will be a Dinner Dance from 7pm to 1am in the Hilton Belmont Ballroom We’ve arranged for a three entrée buffet dinner with all the trimmings  and afterwards to be entertained by The Fabulous Hubcaps, who have performed everywhere from Maine to Florida. The Hilton Hotel is located at 13869 Park Center Road, Herndon, VA. It is ideally located just three miles from Washington Dulles Airport and we have a locked-in room rate of $89 per night Thursday thru Sunday. Click on this link to reserve your room by October 1. Coat & tie or business casual is ok for the men and comparable attire for the ladies. The main thing is to be comfortable and enjoy the evening.

Sunday, the 22nd of October we will wrap up the weekend with a picnic at The Fort Hunt National Park, which is just off the G.W. Memorial Parkway located at 8999 Fort Hunt Road, Alexandria, VA. I was lucky to get “Area A” again, which is the best, because it is the largest and best site at Fort Hunt. It has a pavilion with tables, bathroom and electric, so we will have music. Everything is great with music. We will provide the hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, coleslaw, chips, beer, soft drinks and water. Anyone who wants to bring a side dish is welcome.

Now, for all you lucky people who will be attending, you get all this for only $140 per person. Please click on this link to reply, or print the info sheet below (if not done already) and mail along with your check payable to J.E.B. Stuart Reunion to 8161 Ships Curve Ln. Springfield, VA 22153.  Please don’t procrastinate. See you in October.

Thanks,

Sam Baker ‘62

Justice scholarship fund aids 84 graduates

Justice High School graduation.

Eighty-four Justice High School students who graduated last week received a total of $353,000 in college scholarship money from the Justice High School Scholarship Fund (JHSSF) and its partners.

The JHSSF provides needs-based scholarships to Justice High School graduates who demonstrate a commitment to learning and becoming contributing members of their communities.

The JHSSF awarded $275,000 to members of the Class of 2024, and its partners – including the Rotary Club of Bailey’s Crossroads, the Thurgood Marshall Fund, and the Casey Schulman Foundation – provided an additional $78,000.

The students’ stories are amazing, says Jen Hitchcock, a member of the JHSSF board. “These students have overcome really tough challenges. From medical problems, to family financial challenges, being an emancipated minor, to recent immigrants who left Afghanistan and other countries, these young adults are resilient.”

A typical award is about $2,500, but some students receive between $7,500 and $10,000 when combining awards from the JHSSF and its partners, Hitchcock says. The Casey Schulman Foundation awarded two $20,000 four-year scholarships to Justice seniors this year.

Just over 70 percent of the scholarship recipients are among the first generation in their family to attend college, and 84.5 percent speak a language other than English at home.

The scholarships are meant to be last-dollar funding to close the gap between what the students receive from the federal Pell program, other scholarships, school aid packages, and their families.

To apply, students answer a series of questions, write short essays, and submit recommendations, a transcript, and evidence of financial need. Applicants must have attended Justice High School for at least two years.

This year, the JHSSF not only raised a record amount of money, but it also aided a record number of students – 84, compared to 64 last year.

Since the scholarship fund was established in 2004, the JHSSF and its partners awarded more than $2.7 million to help graduates take the first step toward a college degree.

The mission of the Justice/JEB Stuart Alumni Association is to provide a means for communication for all Justice/Stuart alumni, teachers, and administrators – by providing information for class reunions; scholarship funds, current school info; past remembrances; and annual alumni parties – through this website, newsletters, social media and gatherings. By fostering this Justice/Stuart Community spirit through positive involvement with the school, our Association will give back to the school the morale, spirit, and purposefulness we all were once afforded.
